Subaru SUVs are known far and wide for their remarkable versatility, their award-winning safety, and their long-lasting quality. And while the Subaru Ascent and Subaru Outback have these things in common, they also have some key differences.
At Byers Airport Subaru, we want to help you find out which Subaru model is best for you. That's why we've put together pages like this one that compare different Subaru models. Below, we'll go through some key differences between the Subaru Ascent and the Subaru Outback. Both are available in our huge inventory, so feel free to come take one--or both!--for a spin.

Size Comparison
Perhaps the most immediately noticeable difference between these two SUVs is their size. The Subaru Ascent is a three-row SUV with seating for up to eight occupants, while the Subaru Outback can seat up to five people. Though the first and second rows have similar space, the Ascent has a full, three-seat third row that can comfortably seat up to three people. The Ascent also gives you the option to choose second-row captain's chairs that provide increased comfort while still holding up to seven people.
Technology Comparison
While both of these SUVs are equipped with impressive technology, the 2020 Subaru Outback is truly cutting-edge. The entry-level Outback model comes with two 7-inch touchscreens; upgrading to the next trim level will get you an impressive 11.6-inch touchscreen! The Subaru Ascent, by comparison, comes with a 6.5-inch touchscreen, with the ability to upgrade to an 8-inch touchscreen. However, the Subaru Ascent does come standard with a six-speaker audio system, while the Outback starts off with just four speakers.

Performance Comparison
Both of these SUVs are powered by SUBARU BOXER® engines; the Ascent has one engine, while the Outback has two choices. Choose the 2020 Subaru Ascent and you'll get a turbocharged engine that generates 260 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. The Outback starts off with a standard BOXER® engine that makes 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, but it offers an available turbocharged engine that's identical to the standard engine in the Ascent.
Both the Subaru Outback and the Subaru Ascent have standard off-road features and 8.7 inches of ground clearance, making them a perfect choice for exploring areas off the beaten track. If you want to carry more along with you, the Outback can tow up to 3,500 pounds. The Ascent, however, can tow even more: up to 5,000 pounds when it's properly equipped.

Safety Comparison
Both the 2020 Subaru Ascent and the 2020 Subaru Outback are impressively safe, with standard EyeSight® driver assist technology and available driver assist features. But the Subaru Outback offers an available feature that can't be found on the 2020 Ascent: DriverFocus™ Distraction Mitigation System. If this system notices that your driving appears less concentrated--whether through drowsiness or distraction--it will alert you so you can take steps to remedy it.
