2020 Impreza 5-Door vs 2020 Crosstrek Comparison in Shingle Springs, CA

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek and the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door may present themselves as very different cars, but they share a lot of the same Subaru DNA. They both feature the same smooth and reliable BOXER® engine, the same interior layout and space, even many of the same features. That means, if you're in the market for an affordable new Subaru hatchback, both these cars might suit you. How do you choose between them? Why not compare them side by side! That's what we've done below. Find the information you need to select the Subaru model that's right for your family at Shingle Springs Subaru.

2020 Impreza 5-Door vs 2020 Crosstrek Exterior

Exterior Design: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door

As you start to look at these two cars, you might start to get a feeling of deja vu. That's no coincidence -- the Subaru Crosstrek is directly derived from the Subaru Impreza 5-Door. That means they provide virtually identical interior passenger and cargo space. However, their exterior designs feature some key differences.

The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek gets a suspension lift, offering 8.7" of ground clearance (just like the iconic Subaru Outback). It also gets black body cladding for a rugged appearance and superior durability for traveling down rural paths and gravel roads. Finally, functional roof rails  and standard alloy wheels offer a sharp look and superior toughness. Meanwhile, the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door features a standard street suspension and lacks body cladding. A roof rack is available as a small additional upgrade.

Interior Equipment: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door

Once again, these Subaru siblings are seriously similar inside. At the entry level, they both provide almost identical features, including the Subaru STARLINK™ 6.5" infotainment system. With standard Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™, pairing your smartphone for audio streaming, communication and navigation is seamless in both these cars.

One difference at the entry level: The 2020 Subaru Crosstrek comes standard with automatic climate control -- simply set your desired cabin temperature and the Crosstrek takes care of the rest, just like the thermostat at home. This is an optional upgrade on the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door, which comes standard with manual climate controls (you know, the ones with the red and blue zones on the temperature dial).

When you want to add even more comfort features, both models provide their own desirable options. Inside the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek, you can get black leather upholstery with handsome orange stitching for a luxurious touch and a youthful look. Meanwhile, the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door offers black and ivory leather upholstery. Or, the Subaru Impreza Sport model gives you sport cloth upholstery with red stitching for a sporty appearance.

Safety & Performance: 2020 Subaru Crosstrek vs. 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door

Both the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek and 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door will provide very similar performance. At least on the pavement. After all, they both get the same 2.0L BOXER® engine making 152 horsepower, and they can both send that power to all four wheels with Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. However, since it's a little lighter with a road-optimized suspension, the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door earns better gas mileage: up to 36 MPG, compared to 33 MPG from the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek.

If you're looking to travel off-road, the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is uniquely equipped in ways that the 2020 Subaru Impreza 5-Door simply isn't. The Crosstrek comes standard with Active Torque Vectoring and offers available Hill Descent Control and X-MODE®. When venturing off-road, X-MODE® optimizes all-wheel drive performance for maximum traction and control. Hill Descent Control and X-MODE® aren't available on the Impreza 5-Door, and Active Torque Vectoring is only available on the Impreza 5-Door Sport.

Another difference: only the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek is available as a plug-in hybrid! Ask about the 2020 Subaru Crosstrek Hybrid if you're looking for an environmentally friendly alternative to gas-powered vehicles.
